The story behind the balls.
Pachinko Balls Club Sydney opened in 2018 with eleven secondhand machines and a stubborn idea: that this noisy, joyful, deeply Japanese game belonged in Australia. Eight years later we're the country's largest dedicated parlour.
From a laneway garage to four floors of chrome
"Nobody in Sydney knew what pachinko was. We decided that was exactly why it would work."
Founder Marcus Whitfield discovered pachinko on a layover in Osaka and spent the flight home sketching floor plans. The first club — a rented garage behind Capitol Square — ran eleven rescued hanemono machines and a honesty-box till. Word travelled through Sydney's Japanese community first, then through everyone else.
Today the club occupies four levels of Market City, employs fourteen staff including a full-time machine technician, and ships restored units to collectors across Australia. The honesty box is long gone; the spirit isn't.
The garage days, 2018
Pachinko is chaos you can hold in your hands — loud, bright, social and gloriously unpredictable. Sydney deserved a room built for it.
Our machines, our etiquette and our redemption model all come straight from Japanese parlour culture — no shortcuts, no imitation products.
Half our members had never seen a machine before joining. Hosts teach every newcomer, free, every single day.
Amusement gaming only, audited payout configurations, and a responsible-play policy that's actually enforced.
The Main Hall
Designed like a classic Osaka parlour — long glowing rows, mirrored end-caps, and that unmistakable wall of sound. Three machine eras share the floor so players can feel seventy years of the game's evolution in one sweep.
- Vintage hanemono row — mechanical, pure, unforgiving
- Modern CR digital units with full animation cycles
- Ball rental and host desk at the entrance
The Lounge Floor
Carpet underfoot, warm low light, near-silent premium units. The lounge is built for players who like their sessions long and their conversations possible.
- Table service from the izakaya kitchen until 1:30am
- Private ball counter on the floor
- VIP lounge access for members and session guests
The Showdown Arena
A roped tournament bank with live scoring displays and a seated gallery for sixty. Every machine in the arena is calibrated identically — when you lose here, it's you, not the machine.
- Identical calibration across all 24 tournament units
- Live scoring and bracket screens
- Available for private hire on non-tournament nights
The Prize Counter
A thirty-metre wall of prizes priced in steel balls — from capsule toys and Japanese snacks to headphones, whisky and top-tier gift cards. Restocked every Friday.
- 400+ prize lines updated weekly
- Express lane for club members
- Ball balance stored on your card for up to 12 months
Fourteen people, one obsession
Floor hosts, machine technicians, kitchen staff and the tournament team — meet the people who keep a thousand silver balls moving every night.
Most of the crew learned the game on this floor. Two of our technicians trained in Osaka workshops. Our head host has run more than three thousand beginner orientations and still enjoys every one.

The mission hasn't changed since the garage
Make pachinko a night out Sydney talks about the way Tokyo does — a game, a culture, a community, a ritual.
The next chapter is already underway: a second floor of vintage machines in restoration, an interstate league circuit with Melbourne and Brisbane clubs, and a touring machine exhibition for regional NSW.
Home-and-away seasons against partner parlours in Melbourne and Brisbane.
Sixty restored pre-1990 machines in a dedicated heritage gallery.
From Osaka workshops to Hay Street
Every machine on our floor travels the same road: sourced in Japan, tested in our Osaka partner workshop, container-shipped to Sydney, then stripped, serviced and calibrated by our own technician before it earns a spot on the floor.
What the club means to the floor
"I came for the machines, stayed for the people. Thursday league is the best night of my week — no contest."
"As a Japanese expat, this place feels like home. The sound, the smell, the etiquette — they got every detail right."
"Brought my whole team for a corporate night. Nobody wanted to leave. We've made it a quarterly thing now."
